Cloud In Room

At first glance you imagine this beautiful picture was crafted in Photoshop. At second glance you start trying to figure out if it is a real cloud, or some fibrous material Berndnaut hangs in the room with invisible wires. Then finally it dawns on you. It is a real cloud inside the room Berndnaut Smilde does not use magic, photoshop, or trickery to create these amazing photographs.

He uses science, technology, patience, persistence, and ingenuity. He carefully seals the room and create the ideal humidity, temperature, and pressure. When everything is ready he injects the cloud using fog machine technology that creates a real cloud just as they are created in the atmosphere. The clouds last for only a few moments, but it is long enough from him to capture the magic on film. Maybe Berndnaut is a magician after-all.

From my project based on the W. B. Yeats book ‘Fairy and Folk Tales of the Irish Peasantry’, this illustration is inspired by the story ‘The Demon Cat’.
The story is about a cat who breaks into the fisherman’s house in the night to eat all the finest fish and attacks family members when challenged. It is believed that he is the devil and only holy water can be used to defeat the creature.
